Runaway

To say my best friend and I were naive or a bit green would be a vast understatement to say the least. We Teeny Town gals were honesty greener than frog snot the first few months of college life. Why, we had to scoop up our jaws when we heard our female coeds cussin' and ya could'a knocked the both of us over with a single feather when we saw our worldly peers light up. Don't get me wrong, we'd traveled and seen the bright lights in big cities of the world but we were still greener than green gourds through a goose!!!

We'd settled into our dorm room unpackin' all the absolute necessities of life. Things like jumbo hot rollers, our favorite record albums, Smith Corona typewriter and of course our mandatory high school gym suits. We'd been required to squat, run tires and climb that rope to the moon and back in these one piece beauties over the past four years. Yep, we were most prepared to be sophisticated college Freshmen.

Not only would this be the first day of our college physical education class, it was our first coed Phys Ed. class. This meant testosterone oozin' hunks would be involved. Filled with the hand sweatin' heart palpitatin' anticipations of any red blooded seventeen year old chicks, we suited up for the most important class of our freshman year. The two of us exited the dorm more excited than a couple of grasshoppers in a chicken coop.

We trotted 'cross the SMS Campus like we had arrived and knew what we were doin' directly into the McDonald Arena to meet our fellow classmates. Faster than a hunted deer can leap a fence our excitement turned to pure ghastly humiliation as we saw the others dressed in 'regular' tees, cut~offs and the like. Even our coach said, "girls you don't have to wear uniforms here." 'Just melt me in a puddle and let me evaporate right here. We had to walk all the way back to the dorm in those Jolly Green Giant gym suits. In public no less!!!!

After class we dashed behind bushes, clung to buildings hidin' like 007 himself. We stuck out worse than a pure white Charolais heifer in a field of black Angus cattle. Our hearts sank when we saw no matter which way we slithered, we could not avoid the OK Corral. Oh, just kill me now....I knew I was gonna die!!!!

The OK Corral was a wooden fence that ran down both sides behind the Student Union Building. The Corral was 'the place' studly fellas gathered to 'girl watch'. It was here the Teeny Town Green Girls were gonna have to parade by the hormonal males like models down a runway close enough to feel the gents breath and hear their most colorful (mostly concernin' green) comments.

Upon returnin' to our dorm room I vowed to burn my Jolly Green Giant suit to never be worn again. That's exactly what I did first trip back to the farm. My BFF obviously did not do the same. She kept it. Not only had she kept it, she sent me these pictures last year. To this day just lookin' at these PE uniform pics makes my blood rush turnin' my face hot brilliant red once again.

Del Shannon's number one song hit the top Billboard Hot 100 back in 1961 where it remained number one for four weeks. He sings in the Pop and R&B song of wonderin' why she ran away but this is one gal who will never forget why that day she and her friend tried to "Runaway!!!"

  1. I apologize, I accidentally published before I finished this. I'm still workin' on it for awhile. I kinda tend to edit things to death but this was not finished at 3:13 PM. Monday.

I did this once before and pulled it but it caused some problems so I'm just gonna work with it this way.

    Sorry folks!!!

  2. LOL That was so funny and I do truly understand. I remember many such things happening to me, see, I was a green country girl too! And I don't regret it at all. :D

  3. Oh I well remember those gym suits...mine was yellow and I am glad enough to have no idea what happened to it well over 40 years ago.
I was also pretty "green" when I started college....shocked by many things.
I bet those studly fellow at the OK Corral got their eyes full that day...and probably liked what they saw way more than you knew.

It has challenged my totally Type~A perfectionist self.

I hope ya'll check back when I finish.

I pushed a button on the keyboard that published...Dang!!!!

    Thanks for the laugh today!

  10. Oh so embarassing......but it doesn't matter now......it just makes a good story to laugh at.

  11. I wore a very similar one-piece uniform for high school PE class. Mine was fire-engine red with bloomers attached under the shorts - real classy. We would have looked like Christmas elves standing next to each other. ;oD

    ReplyDelete
  12. That looks just like the one I wore in high school. I don't blame you for burning yours! Still, it makes a great story now.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh my goodness you must've wanted to die! Now I think it is such a sweet story and I'm sure you two laugh. But I bet you wore it well!

Can't believe your roommate kept hers!!

Here's to you Nezzy, a big hearted gal!

  15. I recall the dreadful gym suits only ours were blue and white.
funny story. I imagine you and your bff looked like Christmas trees with your green suits and red faces :) (sorry couldn't help that one)

  16. Great story and having the picture of the outfit doesn't leave us wondering about the runaways.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Hehehehe! I feel your pain! And the pain of having to wear a gym suit! Yikes! Hated things!

Still, a funny story is always appreciated!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Gym and uniforms. We wore white but I hated them just the same. One little touch of a ball, anything and it looked terrible! It's great you got to go to college. Not many young girls got to go or even wanted to back in the 50's. Some did, of course, but most of us just wanted to get married, have babies and have the whitest clothes on the block! LOL Sheesh!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. I really think you and I are sisters. I pick at my writing so long and hard it's a wonder I have anything to post. Plus, it makes me looney.

I had a suit much like that for high school PE. I still have it and am going to photograph it put it on my rural blog. Good idea!!!!!

PS Why in the world would they make girls wear such a skimpy suit, I ask you. :)

  24. Oh my gosh...I hate to laugh at you, but this is a funny story.
I remember the old 'gym class' days...they were never ever good!
Those uniforms were made for inmates! I am really happy your bff kept hers, great for the story line!!!

  26. Well now I really feel deprived. My school was so country we didn't even have gym suits or a gym. PE was outside. Cute entry finished or not.

    ReplyDelete
  27. We had those same P.E. uniforms in school in Chicago Nezzy. Ours were baby blue. Good Lord how I hated wearing those darn things!!

  28. Nezzy ~~ Once again I had to stifle my laughter,
as I read your Post. (hubby is sleeping right next to me in his chair).
I'm so glad you had your BFF with you in this most embarrassing moment, and that she saved the "sweet uniform" lol I usually found my self all alone when it was my time to turn bright red. I guess we are all of the same time period cause I had the exact model ... in blue and it matched with my "country girl green". Thanks Again for making me SMILE.
    Big Hugs ~ Connie xox

  29. LOL...I think it's fine the way it is, and I can just PICTURE you in the "green PE one piece". Ours was black and white horizontal stripes on top (NO!!!!! NOT HORIZONTAL) and plain black bottoms (thank goodness). I LOVE this post!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Now this is funny! I'm so sorry you had a bad time but thanks so much for sharing and making me laugh! I had a very similar suit..in blue. No matter the color, it was ugly. Thanks for the memories!!

    ReplyDelete
  31. My gym suit was the color of a manila envelope. I hated to wear it. But NEVER was I as traumatized as you and your friend. WHAT a story. I could feel every moment of your embarrasment. But looking back on it, kind of makes you smile, doesn't it? The things we do when we are young. Take care.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Oh Nezzy Sweetie...
I am so LOL. I remember my gym uniform as well. Believe it or not, they were WHITE. Yes, I said white. Try keeping those clean throughout the years of schooling. Girl that darn thing saw more CLOROX than I use on my best whites today. Whoever thought up these darn things anyway.

I can see you and your friend sneeking around behind things, just like 007. Oh what a beautiful and fun write this evening. Those were the best days weren't they?

These are wonderful memories sweet friend, just wonderful. Thanks for sharing from the Ponderosa tonight. LOVED it sweetie.

Many hugs and much love, Sherry

  33. How fun to remember this. You gals were so tiny. I would have been mortified too. I wish you had thought to take a picture of you in your green outfit. I bet you would now think that you looked kind of "hot." I think we were and still are too hard on ourselves.

    Bye.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Well I bet you both were as cute as could be. hahaha
I can just see you both trying to get out of there and back to the dorm room.
Now my college girlfriend and I look back on our days and say they were the best times of our lives. We too did some pretty silly things
But look now we can blog about them with our friends. lol

  37. What a great story! We had to wear those in high school and walk by the boys each day. It was humiliating. But we did all look awful together. You poor girls!

    ReplyDelete
  38. Our school was so small we did not have Gym Suits only dark shorts and a white t shirt.
Great story Nezzy..it is great when the old stories make us smile..even if they were terribly embarrasing at the time:)

    ReplyDelete
  39. I went to a convent school and our gym dresses (yes, they were called gym dresses) were heavy and blue and the skirt had to measure exactly 6 inches from the floor when we knelt. Can you imagine the humiliation when we played 'away' games at other high schools where the girls wore coloured shorts and Ts? It was terrible! I shared your pain in this post!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh my goodness I remember those hideous things and I had some blue ones just like those.
Who ever designed those to exercise in needed to wear them and jump around a bit. I seem to remember having to routinely dig them out of places they shouldn't have been, hahahahahaha.
Thanks for the (not so good) memories LOL
    Blessings

  41. OK, I've played that song 3 times now !!! LOVE that song. I really am a fan of some of those old songs.

OMGOODNESS...I really have to feel for ya here. I would have wanted to "evaporate into thin air" as you probably felt. We are so fragile I think at that tiime, trying to be "cool", accepted...all that silly nonsense (at least that's how we look at it now )

WAY TO GO you and your BFF...sporting the green gym outfits. ha ha..I am so glad your friend kept hers so we could actually see a picture of this little beauty.

    You are a darling.
Now...I gotta go listen to that song again
"and I wonder, WHY WHY WHY WHY she went away " (ummm, perhaps the green gym outfits..tee,hee)

    ReplyDelete
  42. Oh Nezzy, I so remember those old uniforms! Ours were almost identical to your photo, but they were royal blue. And a royal pain you-know-where to wear since they were one piece. Kind of like jumpsuits. Ever try to go to the bathroom in a one-piece outfit? Not easy! LOL!! Thanks for the laughs, although it was no laughing matter for you at the time. I had some of those kind of moments myself.
    Have a wonderful week!

    ReplyDelete
  43. Thanks for the laugh, I can just see you two trying to get to the dorm, first year mortification. I was lucky we did not have to wear the uniform although my sister did, and it was this gross washedout blue thing ,I think she burned her's also! Take care and have a great week!

  47. So you graduated from high school when you were 17--me, too! I was 16 senior year up until the end of March. Everyone else was 18 by the end of the school year and some had even just turned 19.

We had those dreadful one-piece outfits like that for gym, too--only ours were royal blue. They made us wear plastic name tags, too. I don't have the gym suit, but I still have the name tag. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Oh Nezzy darlin'

I had many moments like this in school that make my blood curdle now!!!!!!! AND AGAIN, your account of this moment makes ME FEEL IN THE MOMENT and I have even bragged about you to a fellow FARM CHICK that maybe you know...WENDY from NO BOTOX ALLOWED..I have recommended that she read your work. BOTH OF YOU have a style and wit that makes me want to run on over and go to a ranch!!!!! Being the city girl that I am, that is saying a lot!!! I must send her your link. She is a hoot and a hollar and I think you two would enjoy each other's work.

    BLESSINGS SWEET NEZZY! Anita

  49. Ahhh...I remember those wickedly ugly gym suits...but I also remember there were a few girls in our class that wore them like they were high fashion...and looked amazing!

Thanks for the laugh. This was a happy way to start my day!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Oh how I remember those really ugly suits. We used to roll up the baggy legs, pull in the slack and tuck it under to make almost acceptable short shorts. That made them bearable. Fun post.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I can remember wearing a gym suit like that only in blue. They were not attractive in any shape or form. How cute though that your friend saved hers. Must have brought back some good memories of time spent with a good friend any way!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Haha, when I saw that outfit, I kinds suspected what came next... Well, now you have a good story to share, so something "good" came out of that. =) You crack me up!

    ReplyDelete
  53. That's my nightmare--wearing the totally WRONG thing in a situation. How dreadful!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Oh, how I loved this post, Nezzy! My gym suit was bright blue double knit - sleeveless!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  55. Oh my, I feel so bad for you. The only thing that could be worse is if I had to wear that thing and parade around campus in it.
Hey, no wonder I like you. I see Busy Bee Suz stops in too. I love her to pieces!

  56. I'm sure that outfit won a gym suit award of excellence somewhere, LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Oh, my goodness, me oh my! I had a gym uniform EXACTLY like that one. Your story really brought tears to my eyes from all the laughing.

    ReplyDelete
  58. sorry I haven't read the previous comments (time constraints) but WHERE did you guys get the uniforms???

Big hugs, have a blessed day, HUGS!

    ReplyDelete
  60. I'm glad you left the post as is. It's perfect! :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. I have to admit that I was pretty naive when I started college myself, and I saw much that shocked me at first.

I cracked up as soon as I saw the first picture of the gym suit. Yup... I had a couple of those myself! As did, apparently from all of the comments, many of us!
    Oh your mortification....
So, in a future installment of this serial saga, we'll learn how that gym suit affected the rest of your college days!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  74. This is a great story Nezzy! You girls had too much fun! I didn't have to wear any gym suit. Just shorts and a matching t-shirt. :)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Oh my goodness! I can feel the embarrassment! YIKES! Having to pass by all those guys. Makes for a great story, though!!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  76. I can well imagine how embarrassed you both were but what a funny story! hehe I remember having to wear such a gym suit (ours were dark blue) the first year of high school but after that we just wore shorts and a t-shirt. I was always very shy and don't know if I could have survived what you did, having to walk in front of the hunks in those gym suits! LOL xoxo

    ReplyDelete
  77. I had a gym suit just like that! I absolutely hated it and I hated PE. I have absolutely no coordination or physical ability and it was always torture to me! I think that's why I got involved with horses, they can be the athletes instead of me!

You had me laughing out loud with this one!!!

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  90. Thanks so much for sharing your teenage angst of that time. Gosh! We've all had them. I was also from the country when I went to college at the University of Hawaii in Manoa (town). I remember seeing girls drink beer for the first time and I know my mouth dropped open.

  94. Oh my goodness you made me laugh, what a great story. I am glad you found me, I am going to follow you right away. We didn't have those gymsuits here , I don't remember what we had but I know it was terrible. Have a nice day

    ReplyDelete
  108. Oh the horror! I can feel your pain. Our gym suits were white :)

  109. Ah Nezzy, I'm sorry that you got traumatized by wearing that green uniform. I bet the boys didn't know better anyway and were more interested in looking at both of you, Funny the things that we can't forget.

I'm glad that you can tell the world about it now and laugh.
Thanks for sharing this. Hugs. JB

  111. Hi Nezzy, Since I just got back from seeing my best friend from high school you brought a smile to my face. What horror to realize though that this type of one piece outfit made its hayday again in the 80's-I remember because I had one.
Hope you have a great evening.

Oh how I adore you. And to see your comment makes me sing. THANK YOU for taking the time to visit; we are all so busy these days, but love is huge and abounds in the hearts of people who care to leave a message....love to you my FABULOUS FRIEND! Anita

  114. Too funny about the uniforms! And I am glad she kept hers so you could show us! I teach PE in a private school and all my kiddos wear uniforms. They hate them too, but at least everyone has to wear them. And my nickname was Jolly Green Giant (which, incidentally the home of GG is just a half hour away from here, I drive by the statue of him all the time...) in high school. That was from the very short boy whom I towered over...

We will also have frost until the middle of May. It's been a weird year though, so maybe, just possibly we could squeak out an early spring. I am drooling over my seed catalogs and making my wish list!

Have a great weekend, I can't believe it's already here. Where did the week go?

  116. LOL! Sometimes seeing an old friend brings up memories that we haven't thought about in years! Can't believe those were your gym outfits! Very fashionable. Haha! ;)

  117. Oh Nezzy, you are so funny, lol. You are such a good writer. But those jump shorts are so cute, I would have kept it if I were you...Christine

  118. Nezzy....I so love to read your posts...and just giggle with all your similes. They are a hoot. And your comparisons of such things makes me happier than a pig in a mudhole!! [oh, and by the way, you were green...mine was BLUE. But thank god I have no pictures of it. Dear lord]

  119. That is so funny! I remember our high school gym suits. In junior high they were green and they were red in high school. They weren't the most flattering of outfits. I never kept mine either, anyways I know I wouldn't fit in it now.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Those gym suits can't be any worse than the bloomers we wore during PE (Physical Education class)in those days!!! Ours was a convent school and those bloomers were great for covering what they should cover!! LOL!

    ReplyDelete
  121. What a funny story! It brought back memories of my awkward PE years, LOL. I can't believe your friend still had her uniform after all these years!

    ReplyDelete
  122. Too funny....I can't decide if it looks more like a gym or a jail uniform.haha (Ours were knit and burgundy-and-white striped.)

    ReplyDelete
  123. LOL!! Oh dear! At least it was both of you and not just one of you wearing your green uniforms! LOL! Glad your friend didn't burn hers - they look fabulous! Take care

  124. Oh my word, I remember those things. Our high school gym suits were red and had a bloomer leg with elastic that you tucked up yonder and pulled the cuffed leg shorts part down. Talk about uncomfortable and if you ever laughed till you, you know what-ed, everyone would know. I loved reading your post about being naive, cause I still am and I like it that way, but my chubby little cheeks burned for you and your girl friend none the less.

By the way, I just got around to reading your previous post and seeing your smilin face & that sweet brood that you have around you. You are blessed to be sure. Happy Sunday, Sweet friend.

  126. Oh, this just made me laugh so hard! You are a hoot!
Hope all's well in your part of the world. Have a great week!

  127. Bless your heart! We have all had a moment in our lives wherein we wish the ground would open up and swallow us, but it doesn't. Somehow God just keeps us going despite red faces and broken egos (or maybe that is the point).

    God bless!

  128. So funny! Don't we all have one of those stories though, that when remembered makes our face turn red? I know I have a couple!

  129. To this day the thought of physical exercise makes me green around the gills. Love the suit though. :)

  130. Hi Nezzy, I had to laugh, your gym outfit was uglier than mine. Ours was black and white and my friends and I were so embarssed to be seen in them too. Also my very 1st 45 record to ever buy was Runaway.... Thanks for such a great post to read!
    Hugs, Ann

  131. This is neat to have these memories of 1961!

  132. I had one of those dreadful green jumpsuits in 1960. WHOA, they are not complentary to the jr higher. Your story is hillarious, I liked Del Shannon and listened to his music. You sound like a Midwest girl, going to SMS and your mention of Ozark. I live in Kansas and enjoyed seeing the Wizard of Oz photo. First time to your blog--had fun.

  140. What a trip downn memory lane! Our gym suits were identical to yours, only blue. And I hated them so much! I cannot imagine the humiliation of wearing it on college campus when you didn't need to. Thank you for a much needed smile! You're the best!

    Have a wonderful week Nez.

  144. We all have those moments....don't we? My most embarrasing moment was when I was in the 10th grade and the elastic broke on my skirt and it fell to my feet right as I was walking into homeroom. Thanks goodness I had on a slip that day!

  146. Our gym suits were a bright blue. They weren't as bad as the horrible black, clingy swim suits we had to wear though for swim classes. How did any of us. Love this version of Runaway with the girls bee bopping around.

  148. Oh My Goodness! I wore one of those in High School gym class too. Hated those things, but I didn't take it to college. You are such a hoot, and the smiles you provide to my face are causing new wrinkles I don't need. But, I do need the smiles. Thanks. laurie

  154. Oh - I remember those gym uniforms well - mine was blue but the "style" was the same. (I didn't take mine to college, though...)

    ReplyDelete
  155. For some reason, that gym suit appears familiar. Did I wear it in Jr. or high school or something? Navy blue sticks out in my mind, as with the previous commenter. Funny... I must have totally buried that memory!

Anyway, I drank tea a half hour ago, and as I was read the gym suit story, I almost let it out. I was imagining (still laughing now) being you and I felt the embarassment. LOL

And one more thing before I race to the loo, as they say in Austrailia - what's up with those dancing-the-pony-girls circling around the singer? LOL I guess women have been the entertainment since the beginning of time... Kinda like you and your girlfriend were as you walked along the OK Corral. :)

    EnJoy Your Day!

  156. First thing first.. is there anything, ANY THING, sexier than a bunch of cowboys sitting on a paddock fence... ahhh melts me.

Love this post... it just tickles me in so many ways and gave me a good giggle here and there. Nicely written.

I used to follow you long ago and glad to have found you once again. Hugs.

  157. Oh my goodness, I always took 'the long way home' to avoid those boys sitting on that railing/fence. No way was I ever confident enough to go through that, but yet I knew girls that got dolled up every single day just to walk past.

Come over and see my new makeover. AND send me your address again so I can send you 'The Hillbilly Debutante Cafe' for a review. i think you're gonna like it!

  158. We all those moments when we just want to melt in the ground and be sucked in. Thanks for sharing yours here :)

I personally LOVE the green gym suits. And Runaway - is still one of my favorite songs.

  160. It would be interesting to know how many of those uniforms were sold and worn 'back in the day'. The best news for you at college was you had a best friend with you. I got to be the only one from my upstate NY hick town who went to school "downstate" with the kids from NYC - - - so got to stick out on my own - - without moral support as a naive young woman!!!!! Fortunately a like-minded girl from another town and I found each other to conquer the freshman year together.
