UP ON THE ROOF

It was one of those sticky sultry sweltering Ozarks ninety~ eight degree summer days. Ya, know the kind that makes the most proper woman break into a sweat just liftin' a tall glass of cold iced tea to her luscious lips. Mom was visiting, our children were young and the forecast was muggily humid but clear. A perfect day for Mom to entertain the kids while Hubby and I stripped the roof down to its bare necked bones to re-shingle our leaking addition. We had the tar paper, shingles and roofin' nails at hand. I was dressed in shorts, a cute little tee, ponytail and tennis shoes ready for the task with hammer in hand. Hubby and I play well together and we had the old roofing off in no time when out of nowhere like a sonic boom came the loudest clap a thunder this Ozarks farm chicks ears have ever heard. Yep folks, a thunderstorm was movin' in faster than a cheetah chasing a frightened deer. The sky opened up with a cloudburst creating a deluge upon our roof. There was an abundance of white lightning streakin' through the sky over our heads. No, not moonshine but firebolts of lightning discharging atmospheric energy with their vivid flashes. Busier than a couple stumped tailed cows swattin' flies Hubby and I tried to hammer down a barrier when we heard Mama holler like a stuck hog, "It's leaking in the house...BAD!" We desperately needed our shingles. Today I want to talk about another kind of shingles.

Shingles also known as Herpes Zoster is the same virus as chickenpox. The United States reports one million cases of this painful prickly rash a year. If you have ever had the poultrypox you are susceptible to gettin' shingles sometime your lifetime. The virus lives in the nerve roots just waiting like a cat to pounce on a mouse for your immune system to be compromised. It has many long term complications and once you have shingles they are never really gone. They wait patiently in the nerve line until you get sick, lack sleep, get stressed or all of the above and emerge like army of gnawing fire ants runnin' under your skin. This is a subject I have had years of experience with.

What I did not tell ya'll is that when I left for Texas after the big Thanksgiving Dinner , the trip that included the Red Tide, frigid temperatures, windy cold rain and parental duties, that climbing into the car to travel the long 1145 miles I was attacked with shingles. One of the first signs of the agonizing booger is " itchin' like a man on a fuzzy tree" and Elvis is not in the building. I have a natural cure for this nasty condition found in the Prescription for Nutritional Healing Guide. It's cured people who have been under doctors care and hospitalized without results. This chicks kinda like Karl Malden in those old American Express Travelers Checks commercials and I "don't leave home without them." I always mix some up and take it with me just in case.

You mix one tablespoon of sweet almond oil as a carrier then add 4-5 drops of eucalyptus oil and 4-5 drops of lemon oil to it. You use the sweet almond oil to cut the other oil because they can burn you skin if used in full strength. Apply the mixture directly to the lesions at the first sign of and outbreak several times a day. In most instances, the lesions dry up and disappear completely within five days after starting this treatment. When you first start using it you'll think it's not doin' anything then it just starts drying up like grapes in the sun. You can use a cortisone cream between applications to keep ya'll from itchin' like a hound dog with fleas. I just wanted to share this with ya'll so if ya ever get caught with the shingles you won't be like a wounded squirrel in pain, sang by the drifters in 1962, "Up On The Roof!!! "

  1. So let me get this straight...it was 98 degrees and a fast approaching thunderstorm came from nowhere? That sounds like tornado weather. How bizarre but yet intriguing at the same time.

As for other Shingles, glad you found an all natural treatment for it. Sometimes home remedies are better than anything you buy at the drugstore.

  2. OH . . . shingles do not sound fun! :) Thanks for the tip!

  3. Home remedies are very often much better than medicine that costs big bucks. Since I did have chicken pox, I will write this down...just in case.

I want to know how the roofing went.

  4. Oh, dear Nezzie...I have had my troubles with the dreaded shingles. My hubby remembers going to the pharmacy to get some cream recommended by my doctor. When he asked the pharmacist if he had any advice, he replied, "Just try to keep her from shooting herself!" Yes...it was that painful. I've never had another skin oubreak, but have had many painful nerve incidents since then. Not fun! Just add it to the list!
At any rate...I feel your pain! Glad you have a good remedy. I'll keep it handy. Thanks.
Always fun to read your posts...even about the shingles.
    Fondly,
    Joanne

  5. Oouch! Shingles is not fun at all, good to know there are options other than expensive drugs.

    Thanks for sharing!

  6. I'll have to take note of the mixture just in case. I've known several people that have had them and they are miserable to say the least. Hopefully I won't ever have to use it.

  7. I have a male type friend that suffers from shingles. I've heard how horrible it is. So glad you found something that works for you. My sister and I never got the chick chick pox when my brother had it, so I guess we're safe. Hang in there and take care.

  8. thanks for the tip, but I just hope I don't ever get 'em!

  9. I have always had an inordinate fear of Shingles, the itchy painful kind, and I got the Shingles vaccine a few months ago. I have known people who have had Shingles, and you are right, they never really go away. I wish I had known about your remedy before. Home grown remedies can very often be the best medicine. Good for you for sharing this one.

You're so right...they are Awful. I had them in my eye years ago after they broke out on my forehead. The anxiety of worrying about possible blindness was overwhelming. Overwhelming.

I just got vaccinated recently and my ins. did pay for most of it. It's so expensive but I told my husband that we were going to get the shots regardless. Who knows if it's effective but I felt like we had to no matter what! (My hubby's pharmacist told him ins. wouldn't pay, never had paid, etc. Hubby got it anyway and called ins. and they -- shock-- said yes, we'll pay if a certain form if completed. He did and they paid -- so you never know.) sorry for writing so much!! And thanks for your remedy -- gonna tape it to med. cabinet door!

  15. I wasn't sure which way your story was going - shingling and shingles (you always have so a wonderful twist or story line!) -- Roofing is always risky business :( and shingles I've heard stories - I was told one time I had it and took some very expensive meds but it went away quite easily and never returned -- I don't think I had it! Hopefully you don't have re-occurrences....

  16. I can't imagine being on a roof under any circumstances because I don't like heights. You are a very brave lady!! However if I were up there and thunder happened I wouldn't need a ladder. I'd most likely faint and slide off.
I have never heard of this shingles cure. I plan to copy it and save for future reference. Thanks for sharing

  17. How terrifying - both the shingles and the roof story. THanks for sharing the cure!

  18. Nezzy, I've seen people suffer with shingles and it's scary. I like the idea of a homeopathic remedy.

  19. Got the recipe copied. Keep thinking I will get the vaccine but I am like a teenager and think it won't happen to me. In case my teen age thinking is wrong, I have your cure now stored in memory. Thanks.

  20. Great roofing story, but I worry about you shingling with shorts on. I mean, even the roofing guys who take great pleasure in showing off their pecs in 97-degree weather (not that I ever look, of course!)wear blue jeans up there. And thanks for the other-kind-of-shingles help, too. Glad you stopped by my blog, because that's led me to yours and I can't wait to be a regular reader!

  21. Ahhh what a great twist in your tale! I`ve never suffered from shingles but I have laid down a few. I`m glad to hear you have a natural remedy for them, I hear they are truly awful to suffer with.

  22. I got chicken pox when I was in university. Ugh! Thanks for the tip. (I actually love eucalyptus oil!)

  23. Aren't those sudden, out of no where, thunderstorms something!

I had shingles when I was in the 6th grade. It was awful. I could not run or do sports for almost a year due to the damage and the flare ups that kept occuring. They didn't come back again until I was pregnant with my third child. Only someone who has had shingles, understands how awful they really are.

Thanks for the rememdy. I'll keep it handy, along with my grandma's homemade drawing salve. I think I'll share that recipe in a post soon. It's good stuff.

  24. Oh yikes! I've never had the pox. I hope to never get them either.

  25. Shingles, the disease, is something I'm very afraid of. I got the shots two years ago and hope they are effective.

That is an interesting remedy. I wonder if it works with other itchies lie allergies or bug bites?

  33. Right now as I look out into freezing cold snow covered everything, a glimpse into a 98 degree day was refreshing. Thank you! And about the shingles. Oh the horrors! I had shingles when I was pregnant -- 28 years ago in fact. But the itching (unrelieved by anything) is very fresh in my mind. Hope you (and me) never see them again! But, just in case, I will keep that remedy in mind - thank ya! -Tammy

  34. Thank you Nezzy for this remedy! My mom had a very severe painful case of shingles last year (and I know it can reoccur). And just before Xmas, my girlfriend who is in her mid-50's had shingles. When I recently broke out with the itchies, that was my first thought. So far, so good.

Sorry to hear about yours. But again, thanks for the remedy.

Now, about Vick's Vapo Rub -- I have a bit of a love affair with it.

  35. I thought that if you had had Chicken-Pox, that you wouldn't get Shingles, or that Shingles was a grown-up version of Chicken-Pox. I know that I had Chicken-Pox as a kid, and I have the scars where I picked at the scabs!
Glad to hear that you know some of the homoeopathic remedies! I'd rather try them before going to see any Doctor, but saying that, I have Tonsillitis at the moment, and I wonder why whenever you have anything wrong with your throat, and you can hardly sip a glass of water, the Doctors always give you the biggest capsules he can find for you to swallow!

  36. Oh Nezzy Sweetie...
Yippie Tie Yie Yay I have signed up to follow you. I truly thought I had, but somehow it has been an oversite on my part. I so love to read what you write. You are a CARD my friend. I found myself laughing as I read. I needed that. You have the sweetest way with words, and make a person feel so "happy" in their heart. Thank you Nezzy.

I was laughing at you on the roof. My husband and I built a three car garage back in Oklahoma when we lived there. He worked during the day. We had the tar paper down on the front side, and oh my goodness we knew one of those BIG old OKLA tornadoes and T-storms were coming our way. While Tony was at work, I put the kids in the pool to swim, I could watch them from the roof. I climbed up there in that 100% humidity in my shorts, t-sirt and pony tail, and away I went to shingling. I had never shingled before but I mean how hard could it be. I just followed what my husband had started. By the time he came hurrying home at 5pm to cover the roof, he found me on the roof shingling the center line. He was so proud of me. Said I did an awesome job. The next day, My Daddy came by, he asked DH what cross-eyed person shingled that roof. We laughed and laughed and laughed. When he found out it was me, he admitted it wasn't that bad, and was pretty darn proud of his little daughter up there with hammer and nails working away while her hubby was at work. I was right there with you sweetie. It is one heck of a job.

Please have a beautiful day sweetie. Thank you for being my Valentine. I am so tickled when I stop by. You are so precious. Country hugs and much love...Sherry

  37. Hi Nezzy! Oh, I'm so glad you posted this! I had a nasty ole case of the shingles last October! Most of my breakouts were inside and not on the outside, but the pain was just awful. I still have a 'stab' every now and then. I am going to write the recipe down. This is good to know.
Thank you so much for popping in to see me.

Shingles are tough, I remember when my Mom had them. Your story about the roof shingling is amazing! I grew up in the country, on a farm with six brothers and you still would never get me up there. Your a very brave little chicky! I have watched my hubby shingle and it's scaaaary! And then, a thunderstorm? Well, I am glad your still alive. HAGD my friend, and stay off those roofs!!!! Hugs, Cindy

  60. I will take a 98 degree day over a 34 degree day like today any time.

Can you take antiviral during a shingles outbreak or a viral suppression med regularly to prevent them? And while I'm on the topic, I wonder if kids who go the chicken pox vaccine also have some protection against later shingles?

  63. Shingles sound painful but look at you finding a cure on your own. Move over Dr. Oz here comes Dr. Cow Patty:) Thankfully the old shingle germs have not attacked my body like some of friends bodies. There are so many fat cells living in my body there is no room at the Inn for new germs to move in:) Now the shingles on the roof I can relate to. I posted last March or April about my new roof. Hired someone to do the work since hubby is all thumbs but they had the most amount of rain here in years. Broke all rain records. Took the roof down and then the rain came for days. Not a leak before just a dry old roof but that night when the rain started with no shingles...well just let's say while I was crying and running with pots and pans and towels all night long my head was spinning like a scene in the movie the Exorcist. Ah to think that I actually paid for this aggravation too? It sounds like you can relate to that one for sure. Well I will pray for sunnier days for you to keep both the rain and the painful shingles away. Happy Valentine's day.

On a side note, this virus sometimes lays dormant for years..some Doctors think that this virus is very similar to a virus that can cause Trigeminal Neuralgia ( That is the disorder that my hubby has)..anyway a Neurologist said "The virus can lay dormant in your ear canal and then a cold breeze from an open car window can activate it." Just like that..so you never know..

  86. Shingles sounds incredibly painful...I'm glad you found a home remedy that works well for you! My husband had chicken pox as an adult and he was miserable.

A good friend of mine once said that if you and your spouse can do a major house project together (like the roof) and not end up divorced over it, that's how you know your marriage will last a lifetime.

She told me this AFTER my husband and I tried to paint our kitchen together a few years ago. I seriously thought we were going to kill each other with our bare hands.

Nezzy you are a healer too! wow you are a woman blessed with many gifts... not surprising with your gift in gardening, nature is healing in itself, my close friend is trying to get certified in Holistic medicine. I can spot a naturalist at 50 paces,I like learning about alternative natural resources, but I am a cult member to white sugar and flour, I may cross over someday!!
    you go girl,
I am enjoying getting to know you:)
Aloha hugs from across the sea

  88. My sister is a nurse and gets these, and your right stress just brings them back from time to time and they are awful.

    This is my first visit..blessings.

  89. Yes, we need "the rest of the story" on the roofing project. I was amazed at your comment that you and your husband "play well together" because spouse and I are both control freaks and can only accomplish projects in totally separate corners.

  90. Oh dear. I hope I never have to use this cure but it's good to know. I'm sorry you suffered with it but I love the way you teased us into the story. I can imagine you with your ponytail and tennies up on the roof when the rain hits. I love reading your stories!

  91. Sorry to hear you suffer with shingles. My older sister has had them off and on for years. I will write this down and give it to her. Thanks for the advice. I loved the roofing shingles story, too.

  92. Thanks for your comment on my post today and I agree with your husband about the cookies. One day I need to write a post on the fortune cookies we had at our daughters wedding as it would make for a funny post. I only read the fortune and then toss the cookies myself:) I do like the almond cookies much better. Babysitting Mr. Vundervants today and we are making oatmeal bread when we were suppose to be making Chinese food for tomorrows post. Oh well it is good fortune to enjoy our grandkids!

  94. I'm jotting that recipe down - I had the shingles for the first time last spring. Horrible!

  95. Thanks for coming by to visit -- and thanks for the shingles cure. I haven't had them, yet, but I know so many people that have, and I had chicken pox as a kid (which is supposed to be a pre-cursor), so it's good to know a natural cure!

  96. So sorry for your troubles w/shingles, but so glad to find out a cure...just in case. I had Adult On-Set Chicken Pox at age 40 in '99. NOT fun. My Daddy died unexpectedly in June of '99, 2 wks before he died DD#2 had chicken pox &, as I had NEVER had them, I THOUGHT I had nursed her to health as best I could. The day of my Daddy's funeral DD#1 broke out, the next day, I broke out. OH! It was terrible...the girls (ages 11 & 8 at the time) had them & were over w/them in 5-7 days, I had them a full 2 wks! Terrible, terrible, terrible.

I have since been fearful of the shingles but I'm thankful for your advice. I will write your recipe down & keep it, just in case.

    Blessings from Ohio...Kim<><

  97. You crazy gal you! You didn't see that storm coming? Me, I'd just expect something like that to happen. I've been surprised that I haven't had a reoccurrence of shingles with all the stress I've been through lately. At least I'm lucky about something. I had it around my left eye, forehead and scalp. The eye nerves are still sensitive, like they never quite are the same. Thanks for the remedy recipe.

  99. Hi Nezzy! Thanks for the advice, I'm gonna send this on over to my Aunt Dottie who's been suffering. And I'm so sorry you suffer from it too! I love the mental pictures you create of you both on the roof. I wish you had pics to show! haha Now I'm off to read your latest post. Can't miss a one!

  100. I'm copying this remedy for my Mama, who still suffers occassionally from outbreaks. She was highly allergic to all the prescription meds she used over the course of almost a year for her shingles; thanks so much!

  101. Nice information, this really useful for me. There is nothing to argue about.
Keep posting stuff like this i really like it. Thanks.

  102. I would much prefer the house variety; that sounds awful. I'm glad you've found something that helps.

  103. Too bad I didn't know of this remedy years ago. My husband once had shingles and boy was it bad.

  104. Lucy from the Suite life of Ethel and Lucy sent me here, I was diagnosed w/ shingles today. My hands and feet are swollen due to an allergic reaction to a med I was given before Shingles was diagnosed. Right now they hurt more than the shingles, but I'm told that will change. I will give your recipe to my partner and have him get the ingredients. I do have to be careful, they are around my eye, yes, it's scary.

  106. Ooh, shingles sounds pretty unpleasant to have, doesn't sound fun at all. Still, you have a wonderfully fun way of describing your roof repair experience. The sudden rain is a bummer, but you had a nice way of telling what happened. Hope the leak wasn't too bad and you got the roofing repaired!
