LOOK WHAT THEY'VE DONE TO MY SONG

I've been madder than a dwarf with a long stringed yo~yo! Folks, this has been one tough week on this Ozark Farm Chick. I've sadly been greavin' deeply for a loss I never thought I'd have to face. Farm Boy tried to break it to me gently for he knows my passions but I have to tell ya it went down 'bout as well as the iron tonic Mama used to force me to swallow. Few things will rile me up like this and make me madder than a welfare mom runnin' outta food stamps mid~month.

Hubs said, "your not gonna like this" and I didn't. He knows me too well. Sunday mornin' when the radio clicked on I was not awaken by my beloved oldies that have nudged me from sleep for eons. Nooooo0, I heard Scrugg's banjo blarin' which was 'bout as welcomed as deviled egg gas passed in a telephone booth. My oldies station has gone country and turned my world upside down!!!

I fed piles of quarters into the jukeboxes at Stockton's Castle Drive~In and El Dorado's Cooper Drug store durin' my teen years to saturate my soul with this music. Ya just can't beat the sound of The Beetles, Elton John, The Beach Boys and Connie Frances while sippin' a chocolate ice cream soda or playin' the pinball machines. My first party, dance, kiss and pretty near everything else left to the imagination involved this music. Why, life without these grand tunes would be kinda like goin' to the goat house for wool!

My first clock radio was purchased at a little hardware store just off the square in Stockton. I had saved my money and thought I had gathered just enough to own it. I'd been droolin' over it for months. As I very carefully unfolded my bills to complete this transaction, I discovered I had not saved enough to cover my dream radio and the tax. The kind owner smiled and sold me the radio anyway. Woohoo, my tween self couldn't get the boxed tunes home fast enough to set the alarm to awaken me with the best songs ever. Elvis sang me awake that mornin' with ample time to ready myself and catch the school bus. This vintage boombox stirred my sleep through high school and was my early mornin' companion in college as well as the lyrics which shaped my life.

When my hunka~hunka~burnin' love and I married and moved to the Ponderosa there was one and only one oldie station we could get down here in these hills and hollers. We live so far back in the country folks think a Volvo is a woman's body part. I've faithfully listened to this 'Oldies Station' over thirty nine years. I raised Geek Son and Social Butterfly on these nostalgic melodies. My grandkiddos know 'em well. Heck, my posts carry the names of the songs I adore.

While the dishwashers sloshin', washer's agitatin', dryer's tumblin' on Deep Clean Friday, ya can find this caped crusader super cleanin' freak dancin' and dustin', singin' and scrubbin' or rockin' and rubbin' to the oldies as I get the Ponderosa's abode cleaner than a freshly showered priest on Sunday mornin'. Ya'll know how twisted this chick is when it comes to clean but it makes my heart sing and when ya add some rockin' tunes, life just doesn't get any better!

I can be workin' outside sweetin' like a gal writtin' her fist love letter while workin' in one of my many flower gardens yet be happier than a hungry bird with a french fry as long as I have my oldies to listen to. (Pictures from my rose garden last summer) My afternoon swims will never be the same void of Kool & The Gang, The Temptations or The Carpenters. I fear without my oldies I'm gonna sink lower than a moles belly on diggin' day.

I called the radio station and they acted like I was a half a bubble off plum 'cause I wasn't thrilled with their changes. They scoffed at me when I explained there's a country station on every corner 'round these parts and without oldies, they were simply just another station. I felt like I was talkin' to a rock. My emails have gone unanswered. Colder than a polar bears toenails~ they don't care. Oh Mama, look what they've done with my songs!!!

Don't get me wrong. I love music...varieties of music and will listen to more than only the oldies. I love soft jazz, contemporary christian, praise and worship and most anything playin' in my head but I thrive on the oldies. Miss Safka expressed my current feelins on her 1970 hit album 'Candles in the Rain' as she sang, "Well they tied it up in a plastic bag and turned it upside down." This little radio station is now as useless to me as a screen door on a submarine as I cry out "Look What They've Done to My Song!!!"

  1. I feel your pain! I hope they decide the Oldies are worthy, too. I am still hysterically laughing at the deviled egg in a phone booth line- so funny!

Many of God's good blessings to you this day, my friend-

  2. Nezzy, I'm so sorry. Me thinks it's time for you to get an Ipod or MP3 player of some sort and download all your favorite oldies to blast throughout your home (and even wake to them) whenever your heart desires. Blessings my dear...

  7. Rotten radio station! I love the oldies! Do you get Pandora? It's online....have amazing choices.

  8. That's horrible! Try going here to see if that can tide you over once in a while. You can pick years to listen to the top songs at least. Don't ask me why it has such an unappealing name.

  9. That is so sad!!!
I'll bet you have every ad and nuance of that station embedded in your heart.

    Glad you called them!

You could try Pandora and put in your favorite types of songs. I know, I know, it wouldn't be the same.....

  10. I hear you. I am mourning that LOSS with you Nezzy. My oldies station began playing the hits of the day, last year and got rid of the OLDIES too. It was devastating. So now to hear my tunes I head to the jukebox at the local fast food place. There the 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's still play for a quarter. I hope you find someplace to listen to them there. Music soothes the soul and without it we aren't whole. Take care, hon. Good Luck with turning this situation around.

  11. What a sad post !!.....please i will give you spring kisses for a better feeling......love and blessings from me...xxx..

  12. Are you sure it's not bluegrass? We have several country stations, but I don't very often hear Earl Scruggs unless I'm listening to bluegrass.

I hear a lot of the old pop songs on Country stations now though because Country has gotten a lot more pop. Well, at least the country stations I listen to.

I do feel for you though, Nezzy. I know what it is to not be able to hear the music you want to hear. *hugs*
And yes, it's probably time for a good stereo or mp3 player.

    God bless, Nezzy. ♥

  16. Hate it when they change the format of a radio station!
You need to set up your own oldies station on Pandora. Then you'll get to hear exactly what you want to hear.

  18. Oh I understand and know what you are feeling. This happened a long long time ago where I live. I was so so upset; there are no radio stations playing the best/our music anymore.
A couple years ago, I got my son to help me buy an I pod, downloaded our favourite oldies, (last count I have 325) they are all in different categories and I QUIT listening to the radio.
We listen whenever we want and they are the ones we love. I also backed it all up on a memory stick and bring this with us when we drive around.
Who needs the radio station with their cr.....music!

  19. I too feel your pain. My radio station for years changed formats (sorta), moved down the hall AND changed call letters last year. PLUS they got rid of some of my fave DJ's too!
Calling doesn't help cause THEY don't care. You are right about that.
I think it's time for an ipod, mp3 or burning some cd's.
Hope something works out for you!

  20. Can't imagine not having an oldie station to listen too, good luck with that....:-)Hugs

  22. I hear ya Darlin .... same thing happened to my station a year ago. It's what I listened to in my car along with other stations at least in the car I have a chance of flicking around and finding something I want to hear. At the Cabin we get No Stations on the Radio ... Oh maybe if I hold it up over my head and press my nose against the log wall, while standing on one leg, I could pull something in. lol
We have dish tv so I tune into their music stations .... I can pick the 50's, 60's, 70's, Mowtown, or Elvis all day so I clean away in Happiness. Wont help you to wake up but might help with your chores. Good Luck Honey .... I Hate Change !!!

  26. I am so sorry. I love the oldies too; in fact I am stuck in the seventies (music wise). I have had to resort to listening to my ipod to get the type of music that I want.

Good luck to you. Do you listen to an ipod?

  27. Oh Nezzy Sweetie...
This gal would be Blue Eyes Crying in The Rain. Oh my gosh, I can't imagine being on the Ponderosa and no Oldies to listen to.

Are we going to have to start down loading oldies onto CD's for you to put on and play all day? Let me know I have many CD's that I could copy and send to you. I love my oldie but goodies.

Another precious write my sweet, sweet friend. I love stopping over when you post. I needed a Nezzy fix.

Many hugs and SO much love, Sherry

  28. ahhh, you poor gal, I know how you feel, with not many stations to begin with out in the country! You might have to order up Satalite radio! (Hey, my blog is going private, if you care to tag along, come and leave your email) :D

  29. I LOVE Rich Mullins' "Screendoor on a Submarine" song!!!!! About the country music, I'm with you!!! Our oldies were the best. If they weren't, the current musicians wouldn't still be singing them!!! The newer songs cannot beat "our" oldies and as far as country music - - - - I would rather have silence. Sounds like you will be playing CDs or setting up your own station on the internet, Pandora.com.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Oh how I love this post, Nezzy! You need those oldies. I recently blogged about my crush on BJ Thomas in college days!!! Wishing you a fantastic weekend.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Well darn it Nezzy, I'd be madder than a Tasmanian devil if that happened to me too. I love those oldies. They are all great song that had some meaning especially to older folks like us. We are not all dead yet...

I've been thinking. Maybe if the radio station doesn't want to play them anymore, just maybe they would sell them to you.
You probably could start a thing going on Facebook to get them to play the old songs again. Hugs, JB

  32. Oh my! Maybe it's time to load up your ipod and get a dock for it so you can listen to your music any time, anywhere!

  34. Deviled egg gas passed in a telephone booth???

How do you come UP with this stuff? You are cracking me up. I'm sorry that your station has gone all country on you. I happen to prefer oldies myself. They take me back in time, ya know.

    Sorry for your loss, Nezzy.
I am ashamed to say that being on the recieving end of your cow patty tizzy is making me laugh, though.

  35. I so totally feel your pain! I LOVE our oldies stations here...but they keep redefining the term oldies and pushing out the songs I like.
Now melanie...that brought back memories...love to you!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Mister LOVES the oldies too (maybe that's why he loves me??!!) and he would "fail to thrive" without them. Me? I'm a pop country fan. That said, there needs to be a variety of music so we can all hear what we love. Hope you can find another station to enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Maybe we need to get all your followers to get together and start a letter writing campaign to that crazy station. It probably wouldn't make them change anything but they sure would get an earful.
You can't beat the oldies.....maybe you can find a jukebox on e-bay.

    ReplyDelete
  38. You don't have to give up your oldies and goodies just because the radio station is making changes.. There are other possibilities besides listening to the radio station.

BTW, changes remind me of Blogger. It often comes up with changes that only cause frustration to us humble blog writers.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Ohhhh, I can commiserate! My oldies station keeps up-ing the year. Seventies and eighties? Really? hmph...

  40. I have an old tape by Melanie somewhere in a box. I had forgotten about it until now. Fun post today. I had to finally throw an old radio of my parents away as I just couldn't keep everything, and it only worked part time.

  41. Aww sorry for your loss. They did that to a Montreal (Ils ont changé ma chanson, Ma)oldies station about 15 years ago... turned it into talk radio. It was back to the oldies by the end of the year. So don't lose heart.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Darn it all to heck Nezzy I can't believe that they would do this to you. As faithful as you have been this is just not right.
Why do they always change things.
Sorry you are suffering. Maybe you will fall in love with this music. lol

  44. I'm really sorry they took the Oldies off. I also like to listen to those songs. If you get Sirius satellite radio they have many stations with the oldies. We have it, I think it is around $120 per year.

  45. They just don't play nice, do they? Just when we are getting used to things, they changed them up again..

I second the iPod idea for you!

I need to get back to my radio listening while cleaning routine. Nothin' like it. Hope you find another one soon.

Melanie sings Lay Down, one of my all time favorite songs. Riding in the back of my parents car, I head Mo-town to Acid Rock growing up. Love it all.
    Good luck.
Here is when I wrote about Melanie.

  56. Oh sweetie, I feel your pain! I remember listening to Wolfman Jack on a station out of Little Rock late into the night on my transistor radio, hidden under my pillow. It was fuzzy and would fade in and out, but they were playing the music I still love today.

I listen to the true oldies channel. Do a search on trueoldieschannel.com and see if you can find a station near you. They play a great mix of the songs we love best!

  57. The same thing happened to me years ago, I still have not found a decent oldies station to replace that station that was turned on at 5AM and was on all day long til supper at 6PM..it got me through the day! I finally bought an MP3 player and I listen to my own vintage selection of oldies..I made CD's for the car too. There is nothing better than the oldies, write a letter to the Owner of the Radio Station.
We share Grands with the local Radio Station moguls..all Country Stations or a mix of ballroom dance and classical (yuck). I have told them I do not listen but I will if one of the stations becomes an oldies..they just laugh.
Country is where the money is nowadays. I am sorry for your loss Nezzy..and I understand totally:(

  58. Came over from PJ's place. What a tragedy!!! In my neck of the woods we have an oldies station that's been around for---eeeee---ver!! I just don't know what I'd do if they changed. I do all my housework to my oldies station.
Well, if nothing else 'Time Life' has some of the best collections around that you can buy.

  64. Now that is a bummer. My condolences for that awful loss. The computer really does have lots of radio stations available for free or you can do what I and others have done and go Ipod. By downloading my own CDs and raiding my friends stash, I have over 350 of my favoite songs. If you can't fight them, go your own way. If you got the computer route, invest in some good speakers. Good luck gal.

  65. Oh Nezzy, I feel your pain. :(

You still have your sense of humor though. lol

Seriously, I do sympathize. I only listen to the radio in my car, but I'd surely miss the one and only station that I like if it was programmed to something else. And guess what - it includes many oldies! It's Lite 98, and it's just enough for this little girl of the 1960s.

Do you think you're going to have to get Geek Son to hook you up with an i-something with your fav recordings, that can be used as your alarm clock?

  76. Thanks for stopping by my blog. :)

I am soooo with you on the oldies!! LOVE them. LOVE LOVE LOVE them. Something similar happened here in Portland Oregon a few years back and messed up my equilibrium for a few months until another oldies station came on the scene.

At this point, I mostly listen to my MP3 player, because no one talks over the opening bars of a song, there's always something I like, I can turn it up as loud as I want to, and there are no strident commercials. Which always make me want to scream.

  90. You may just have to search for yor favorites and make your own mucic! Sorry, I love the oldies, too.

  91. I love the 'oldies' from MY generation and even a few from decades before...but only very few country songs can make MY chart. I know what you mean. But, I can't stop laughing [tho I admit I just spewed o j out my nose a bit]...on the 'like passing deviled eggs in a telephone booth' mention...that 'cracked' me up.

OSPREY's 'catch of the day'...come on over to view a couple of magnificent images of the regal bird if you have some time!!!

  92. That really truly is a shame. I too do my house chores to oldies and seem to dance to the music as I scurry around washing clothes, cleaning the bathroom and all the chores that normally are mundane. I listen to CDs, not to a radio station though. I just cannot stand commercials of any kind, that was one of the main reasons I stopped watching TV eight years ago. I live an ad free life so that means I don't listen to all the talking and yapping on radio or TV. My heart goes out to you. I agree with you that there are so many country stations around one more is just that: one more country station. Nothing wrong with country music, I personally am not a huge fan but I don't mind a country song now and then. I truly like the oldies. The town I lived in before moving here had a great little grocery store. There were several choices in stores there. I chose the one that had oldies music playing all the time. I would be bop down the aisles and throw my groceries into my cart and sometimes even sing out loud. Great store! Anyway, I hope you find some way to have the music in your life that gives you so much joy. You will go through withdrawals in the meantime, and that is not pretty. Hugs.

  93. You have more comments on one post than I have visitors in a week! I'm sorry that you lost your station ... I would go for oldies over country anytime! My favorite station is classical but my second is the oldies station near here. Hope you can find another one.

  94. Well, with the internet -- you can pick and choose your style of music pretty easily -- iheartradio.com is a great site... :)

  95. I don't blame you, that would REALLY upset me too! Do you have an ipod to hook up to speakers with all your fave songs?

    ReplyDelete
  96. I hate when that happens! I also hate that Avon discontinued my favorite lip gloss color. So Rude!
Your Volvo comment really made me laugh! :)

  97. I love the old country, Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard. The new stuff is just noise. I really love 60's music. We were so lucky to be teenagers when music was what defined us. I would save my babysitting money just to buy the newest 45.

  98. Oh no! That would make me angry too. So sorry to hear this.

  99. Say it isn't so?

Eeegads...what is the world coming to?

I am so very, very sorry for your loss.

  100. I hate that for you - I love the oldies but goodies too! Change is hard. sandie

  101. Oh no! You'll have to get an Ipod and put all your favorite oldies on it.

    ReplyDelete
  102. Why Nezzie, I've never seen you this mad. I know you're disappointed and I'm sorry but at the same time, this post made me laugh hysterically. Forgive me.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I hope you find yourself some oldies! This post of yours had me in tears! You have a way with words gf!

  104. One can only hope that their advertising dollars see a drastic drop and they will go back to their old format. Bah humbug. I am also crazy for the oldies.

So sad that their shaking up has caused you to twist and shout. :(

  105. Hello there, simply become alert to your weblog thru Google, and fosbobetund that it’s really informative. I’m gonna watch out for brussels

  106. Oh my, but you are madder than a wet hen! I feel your pain. I too grew up way back in the woods and all we had was radio to ease the quiet that only deep country provides. My sisters and brothers were all older so their tunes became my tunes and I'm still listening to the oldies and smiling just remembering the good times. I do hope you get your oldies back.
    May I suggest Pandora?!
    Thanks for visiting.
    Hugs,
    Patti

  107. I'm so sorry...and I can totally identify with you. I love my old time rock & roll! I like Country too but not as well as those oldies I danced to and fell asleep to every night. Hopefully you'll find another station soon.

  108. Wow how depressing Nezzy!! Get yourself a Sirius Satellite radio, thats what I did!
My first radio was a little transistor. I remember having a few through the years.
    BTW I love that song!
    Love Di ♥

  109. I totally understand, Nezzy! I've been depressed ever since they did away with my beloved oldies a couple of years ago or so. I haven't been able to find a station that plays them and so I just don't listen anymore. And I love, love, love music! But the stuff they play today, they call that singing? Ack! Some of those voices sounds like chalk screeching on the board to me. Oh, there are a few good tunes here and there, but not nothing like the oldies! I guess I'm going to have to get with the program and buy an Ipod and get my own favs on it to listen to. But I miss my radio!

  110. What?! No CARPENTERS?! What is the world coming to?! Sheesh! Clearly, this is a major change, and I can see why you would be so upset. In the 114 comments before mine, I'm sure you've received plenty of advice, so I won't offer more. Just know that I feel for you :(

  111. Hi Nezzy,
Oh boy am I late here been kind of preoccupied as of late.
I love this post! I am like you, love my oldies! So rotten of them to do this to you! Best line...volvo is a female body part! hehehehe! You are the best!
Keep those rose pics coming!!! My goodness, they are simply stunning!!!
I think you need an i-pod or similar and just listen to your own tunes. I know, better to have a good station but that's how it is around here too. I am listening to public radio more just because we have so few good music stations.
    Big Hugs,
    Cindy

  112. Oh, Nezzy..,. maybe suggest to them to have at least a Flashback Friday or something where they play only oldies that day. Once a week.

Or try Pandora. Thatès how hubby and I get our fix for music that we miss. :)

  113. How dare they ? Well, it appears they don't care, so Jimmy crack corn and you don't care, you'll go else-where!Least-ways, I would.

You are right, they have chosen a very popular genre many stations already offer, so why not stay true to the one they already had?

I think you need to download the music you love to hear in the morning and then it will be at your fingertips to your ears instantly, anytime you want it.

I buy CD's of my favorites and blast them throughout the house as i work, spin & weave my wool,...

Nezzie Needs Nourishing Music, bring on the oldies!

  114. Sorry,I meant to spell "Nezzy"...

  115. Sometimes you wonder if things 'change for the better' or whether it changes because people expect change. I'm sorry your music station changed it's program. Hopefully you can find a different one to wake up to!

  116. nothing like the oldies, your right! I'm not a happy girl when they change either. Its not like we dont have plenty of country stations...

    ReplyDelete
  117. Those oldies were the best--they had substance and staying power.

    ReplyDelete
  118. So sorry they changed your music station! There is nothing better than being faithful to one channel and then they turn around and screw it all up! I hope you find another one soon!

    Lots of hugs.

  119. My oldies station went news radio. No beat. Hardly a melody. Now how can you dance to that?! Fortunately, another station started up that fed my soul. Ahhhh!!!

  121. Sorry, Sweetie =( I love the oldies, too. I think I see satellite radio in your future ~

  122. Nezzy, I'm so sorry! I love music too but I'm so ADHD that any distraction gets me off in never-never land and I snap back and 20 minutes have gone by....t.v.. radio,....if I want to get work done I better keep them all off! Plus, a lot of my memories that are connected with music aren't all that good so it sometimes brings up sad stuff so I don't go there.
I know what you mean though...they were downright rude to you! And these are the folks that will be taking care of us in the home....scary, huh?
Where do you come up with all those "sayings"? You're like a walking encyclopedia! You should write a book! My fav so far is the one where you said "people around here think Volvo is a woman's body part!" I laughed so hard! Thank you! I LOVE to laugh! Have a great one...oh, and I love your roses! Gorgeous!

  125. You've certainly got a way with your writing style! Some of the pictures you describe have me cracking up I can't read the rest! The deviled eggs part is unbelievable! Sorry about your station changes - takes a while getting used to. Bless you!

  126. I am always amazed at the number of quality comments that your readers generate. With today's technology you can dial up old time radio stations on smart phones. I listen to Beatles readio every day as well as other non music oldies. Love radio. I collect transitor radios and older tube radios like you pictured. Great blog post.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Well, That is not a good thing! You need your tunes to listen to! I love my oldies and my praise and worship.... and always have them going unless Pa has had enough.... he likes it quiter than I (probably why I am loosing my hearing as I crank them up :) ) Looks like you need to upgrade to an I-Pod... all our grands have them. Thankfully they have a fix now a days for stupid radio stations!!!

    ReplyDelete
  128. I need to start keeping a list of your clever sayings. I always think I'm going to remember them, so I can use them sometime, but I can't ever get them quite right! I am still hee hawin' over the Volvo! Our TV is on Satellite, and there is an oldie station that I keep it on while I'm cleaning (when I do clean), so I know what you're talkin' about! So sorry you lost your station, but it sure made for a fun read! laurie
