THREE BLIND MICE

It's colder than a two day corpse in an ice house and the multi~layers of frozen glaze on the ground range from freezin' rain to fluffy wet snow. Here on the Ponderosa we feed critters....all sorts of critters. This is one Ozark gal who feeds wild birds year round. Rocky the squirrel always has an ear of corn hangin' on the big Oak tree to nibble when a cravin' strikes him and Tiger the Wonder Dog continuously enjoys a full meal deal. The cattle always have well rounded meals and the donkeys tummies are plump. I have to admit I've seen,'coon, 'possum, skunk, armadillo, coyotes, deer, wolves, big cats, lost horses, neighbors buffalo and yes even bears takin' advantage of our generous portions but there is one thing 'round these parts that is about as welcome as an outhouse breeze in the heat of summer are mice. Even worse are their giant kissin' cousins 'RATS'!!! Big fat furry bold overfed rats!

I would walk around the place doin' chores hearin' little movements 'round the foundation. Since the place is surrounded by active birds, lizards and who knows what that will sun on my steppin' stones on a warm day, I truly didn't give it a second thought 'til one day after unloadin' my supplies I noticed somethin' dart by outta the corner of my eye. Bein' the curious chick I am I decided to make like Nancy Drew (didn't ya just love those books???) to take the watch and wait approach. Much to my surprise a well fed rodent zipped straight to Tiger's dog dish grabbed a kibble, devoured it then helped himself to more. Since Tiger wasn't present, 'cause he was at my Mother~in~Love's runnin' with her dog Bobby (Kinda like Dumb and Dumber, did I ever mention that Tiger is about as sharp as a bowl of mashed 'taders???) I removed his dish from the scene. I offered up a delightfully delicious dish of green Decon pellets and impatiently waited. Heaven help me here... I'm not a patient kinda gal! Almost immediately I had three rats feastin' on their poisonous banquet. I watched them devour three large Jiffy Peanut-butter lids filled with Decon then after a playful game of tag 'round the tires of my car one of the little fellas curled up on my doormat and took a leisurely nap. This is the moment I picked up the phone and demanded Hubby to bring somethin' 'stronger' home 'cause I wasnt' havin' no 'Watch Rat' on my doorstep and the Decon was about as useful as buttons on a dishrag at this point!!!

The little furry fellas finished off my supply so I brought their platter in. The next time I passed by the French door there stood three fuzzy varmints searchin' for their dish lookin' in at me as to say, " oh please, pretty please Mam, may we have just one more morsel???" Later that day I put out the 'bait' that was used at our local feed mill to keep such critters at bay, surly that would be the death of my new found friends. Thanks Hubs, sorry for the bossiness but times like these call for a chick to be a bit demandin'. Heck, these Super Rodents were cartin' off my ten pound supply of Hombri Mini Blocks off faster than I could put 'em out. No doubt for the big orgy they were were plannin' to have above our family room that night. I made the little ferrous tenants my famous poison peanut-butter balls. Ya know the ones my dear DIL said, "If Mom kicks the bucket, were not takin' anything outta her freezer 'cause we'd be dippin' 'em in chocolate and eatin' them!!!! The ones that almost always insure sudden death but this time my deadly treat didn't work any better than a rubber-nosed woodpecker in a petrified forest. This was war!!! Somethin's eatin' my storage building!!! Really, gnawed a big old hole right through the thing and it has big thick wood siding. I purchased some Just One Bite, a warfarin free product as was the Hombre, and placed it everywhere. I made the peanut~butter balls outta it, I mixed quick set concrete and granola with it. It's been several days since I've heard the pitter patter of little toes or the gnashin' of teeth. Hopefully... I've seen the last of their antics!!!

This English nursery rhyme and musical round was published in "the Seconde part of Musics Melodie in 1609 by the teenage author Thomas Ravenscroff. We as humans are far too often as blind as those three blind mice. We walk around with blinders so busy and burdened with cares that we can't see the 'Light' that surrounds us every blessed day. God is our light but folks Satan is workin' overtime. He is out to steal our joy, ruin families and darken our days. Today I beg you to pause, take off those dark glasses and enjoy the rays of His real truth. Bask in the warm lovin' light that our Heavenly Father brings 'cause I sure don't want to end up in total darkness like one of those "Three Blind Mice!!!"

  1. We also fed the critters. We had a birdfeeder sitting on the corner post of our front porch until it atracted turkeys. A hen and a rooster that we watched, eye to eye when they would look in our storm door to see what was gong on inside. The next year they came again, but he began attacking anyone that stepped outside. We called the DNR becasue we were worrried about children and my elderly and unsteady mother. He attacked me carrying in groceries. Those talons were as big as my hand. They said they couldn't do anything.

Some time later, the Tom disappeared. He had attacked the neighbors wife in her garage. Then the DNR came out and wanted to know if we knew what had happened to him. I told them I really didn't....But, between you and I, I have an idea...

  2. Oh my! that is 'halarious'... (not!). I can understand the fusteration.

I can remember catching a whole family (13 to be exact) one right after the other - over the course of a couple of days. I'd sit on my couch and watch them come up out of the kitchen stove burners to the waiting trap on the counter - oh snap!!! It was almost funny....

  3. Nezzy, girl, Decon will not work without water. When you feed them, you just need to put a pan of water out for them. Then they fall over right there.
One Bite works better than anything out there. You don't have to water them with that. We have mice come in every fall, in one day they are gone. Best stuff ever. Just throw the bag out there and it's a done deal.

  6. I just love you my friend. I laughed so hard all the way through this. Your descriptive flow of words always keep me on the edge of my seat.

When you mentioned Warfarin...I laughed again because my mom (who is no longer with us) used to take the medicinal Warfarin to help thin her blood. She always said it was like taking rat poison and we would laugh and laugh. She would of loved reading this post!

On a serious note, I just saw your post below this one. What a beautiful tribute to your dad Nezzy...so beautiful. I loved the song that accompanied the slide show. Again, it reminded me of my parents back in their day. It brought back fond memories for me.

    Love you,

  7. Oh! Nezzy sweet girl, I love visiting the Ponderosa I don't think that there's another blogger out there who makes me laugh as much as you do. Your descriptions are so detailed I could be right there with you.
We had mice out in one of the outbuildings recently but Mr B has seen them off, j'espere!

  9. Oh my if you take on Satan like you do mice...he's not going to steal one bit of your happiness for sure. The only place those pesky critters bother me is at my camper which is closed up for the winter. They think I left it there in the woods just so they will have a place to stay. Then every Spring the battle is on again. They do say God made everything and everything is good, but we just haven't figured out what good those mice, rats, flies and mosquitoes do. I hope your Wednesday is a wonderful one!

  12. Oh my. I know we have big rats in Missouri, I saw one cross the road when I was driving and it was sooo big. But I'm thinking you've got tough rats there and bold. Wow. Goodness, I don't know what to say except pleeezzze don't tell them where I live.

Because I use to feed the feral cats outside, skunks, possum, raccoons, and blackbirds also fed. Now that I have only one outdoor cat, I feed Ms. Kiki Dee inside. I saw a possum peeking in the screened door one night. Whaaat? Get outta here.

  16. This post is so funny, I loved reading the way you told of your ordeal with those critters. I hope they are all gone now...with the concoction you mixed up for them they have to be either dead or too heavy to walk to get food. lol

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh my goodness Nezzy, I totally dislike mice too. Almost as much as snakes. The rest of the critters are welcome here. I needed the laugh you offered up here on this beyond cold, deep snow day. Thank you and God Bless You!

Hmmmmm I've never seen any bear in this part of Missouri but I hear they are definitely in your neck of the woods.

  18. Dear Lord, please help me type right...

where the heck are your kitties? I spect they are spoiled rotten by the food you are giving them and could care less about a meal on wheels, er, feet. ours would fall into that catagory! cept for playtime!

seriously, you've seen wolves? that's too cool!

out here in Arizona, there is nothing ~ not even roadkill! kinda miss that in a weird way!

    good luck!

  19. Yuck, mice :P, we once had an infestation in Florida when my neighbors decided they would have a pool dug up for themselves. It churned all the ground critters and some ended up in our house. it was horrid.

  20. I can relate, completely. we have rats that come out of the palms at the back of our lot. they come out when it rains and they love dry dog food. when we buy a 44 pound bag of dog food, we have to divide it into plastic buckets with lids. if that bag sits there over night, it has holes in it the next morning. they are big ones to. not mice, but rats. we have 3 traps, hubby baits them with beef jerky sticks and traps them. if we go a few days with empty traps, we know we are safe until it rains again OR if we forget to dump the dog food

It's a wonder those little varmits survived any of the "treats" you left them. My goodness, you do come up with some concoctions.

Why it just gave me the squirms reading about them!

  23. We have 8 bird feeders filled of all sorts of yummies 2 suet feeders and a feeder filled of whole peanuts for the squirrels , chipmonks and whom ever wants it all year round and in the summer only we add a Orieal feeders and Humming bird feeders with their favorites in them as well. We have a family of generations of wild bunny's under my potting shed that we feed carrots to and yes even have had the odd mouse move in lol the dog and cat are well feed and get treats ,so ya I think they all do well for themselves loland besides if we dont look after them who will. Great post and photos, Have a wonderful day !

  24. I don't mind mice, but wild rats are something else again. I just hope there's nothing left out that the dog can eat when he gets back. You always make me giggle out loud--even if you're talking about rat horrors!

The commercial was strange, sad, and funny all at the same time. ;)

  27. We have an open garage place and also have some holes here and there were the critters can get in. I never had too much trouble as long as I kept a couple of "working" cats. Last summer we had no cats and I started seeing droppings and hearing noise over head.

I have been running a string of snap traps, both big and small and have caught most of them. I bate with peanut butter.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Gee, you made them sound so cute, I was almost sorry that you were successful. One Bite does work and I just hope they don't go someplace you can't access to die and to smell.
If that happens, burn candles, it helps.

  43. You should plant Mint around your house as this keeps mice away. Traps are not always effective , and poison is advised only as a last resort.

As usual, your colourful writing style, Nezzy, is the cherry in the cake. The video and the illustration greatly contribute to making this post into a delightful comic read.

  50. Wow...deep today! Reading the rats tale was your usual never fail to entertain story that I could hardly wait to finish! Then I got to the three blind mice part and the real evils of the world and have to agree with your take on life. I like to be a Pollyanna though and only think about good things and heaven etc. It's not that I am unaware of evil out there, I just hate to dwell on it or give it ANY attention at all. And with that, just know that I love your blogging style and wish you a benevolent day!!!

  57. LOL! It is so hard to keep rats away on a farm where there is all that free food on a cold winter day.
Your story reminded me of the time at my Father-in-laws farm. They had this old chicken house that was about ready to fall down so they decided to just pull it down with the tractor and then pack it away. Of course you take any occasion on a farm for a change of pace. So we had to all file out and watch this action. When the building fell over all of these rats starting running out from everywhere and anywhere to get away. You never heard so much screaming in all of your life as we all took off running away from the rats. Afterward we all fell over laughing about who ran faster, the rats or us. LOL!

  64. Nezzie...your post reminded me of the days before we remodeled our circa 1724 cottage (that we nicknamed "Wild Kingdom" because there were so many critters living under the floors and in the walls). I used to worry that if there was a poisoning in our area, I would be accused because I spent so much money on rat poison at the local hardware store! When I would moan and groan about my attempts to catch the little beasts, my husband would yawn and say, "They have to eat and live somewhere too!" He grew up on a farm. Critters didn't make him cringe. We once had a skunk and a coon fighting under our tv room floor. The screams and scents that came out of that one will never be forgotten! I finally learned that most critters don't like light. Once we put a light under the floor we never had the problem again. I think the skinny tailed critters just got lonely without the skunks and coons and found another dwelling. Anyway, I feel your pain. You did good work. Quiet means success in such matters. Nice work!

  65. P.S. Nezzie. My son-in-law, who is from Aruba, says that this country could save a lot of money on its military if they just released millions of rats wherever there was unrest. The enemy would flee and all would be well.

  66. The closest we've come to this many critters was in Belize when scorpions landed on my pillow, despite the mosquito net, and I opened my oven to bake some potatoes and a family of rats lived inside. What a lot of animals you have visiting, it seems. Orange County doesn't see wildlife, only crazy actors!

Coincidentally, my horseback riding teacher told me today, that she was wondering why the cats on the farm were getting skinny, until she saw a fat and happy possum eating their food!

  75. You are toooooo funny! Fortunately (knock on wood) we don't have trouble with mice - - - guess they don't like the "smell" of our cats. Praise God for that. It is difficult trying to bait rodents when you have other animals that might like the bait, isn't it? Sounds like you kept a good eye on it all though.
I loved that advertisement for the cheese. That was very clever.

  78. Oh Nezzy I have some mice and squirrel stories but I won't get started here. Dead, stinkin' in the walls and ceiling stories. We finally called Critter Gitters and had them come out and do some plugging with steel mesh and cauking and some 800 bucks later we have not had an issue. The bucks were worth it, I couldn't take the surprise of another stink.
That 800 bucks includes getting rid of the bats that were in the attic. I am telling you, we aren't the only ones that own this house, we share it with every dang critter that wants to move in!

Nezzy as soon as the weather gets better and you find a little free time I would love to meet you at your fav Mexican place or ours and have a good old chat. We hit your bit of the country as much as twice a month. Later Nezzy Gal................

  84. Oh...do I ever hate rats, and mice....sound like you have gotten rid of the little critters. In my other life they also ate a hole in my storage room and then moved in under my refrigerator in my kitchen...but we managed to get the with cheese and traps.

    Have a sweet day,

    Jo

  85. I have never had to battle any rodents in any places that I have lived.;) I remember vaguely as a child in our cottage in the Slovakian mountains, one evening before going to bed I exited the bathroom and saw a mouse standing on my boot in the hallway, We looked at each other briefly and I recall I was not scared as I thought it looked so cute.;) At times I would hear it later moving around somewhere behind the walls in the bedroom, but then my father put out traps and it was caught. I recall feeling sorry for it.
These days I rely on Batcat should there be any uninvited visitors.;)
However the ones in your post seem like some sort of mega-rats on steroids.;)) Thus I hope you got them.;)
    Have a lovely Monday,
    xoxo

  88. You know, I've never even seen a rat? Alberta is the largest rat free territory on earth. I keep looking for them when I travel - even in pet stores - but to date I've never managed to lay eyes on one.

  89. I almost sorta feel sorry for those pesky rodents. You are quite the formidable opponent.

  90. You are so brave. I see a mouse and I am up on something screaming and then I break out in hives. I love how you put so much color into your blog writings.

    Blessings to you.

  92. I just love this post. So well-written and funny. Living on a farm myself, I can so relate. Just this morning I was awaken to the sound of the little critters scurrying inside the walls. I used to have a cat who considered them a delicious treat and would rid the place of them in no time. Unfortunately, Mason, my current feline just regards them as interactive toys and they continue to outsmart him.

My eyes are open to the beauty and abundance that surrounds me and every day, I am grateful.

Blessing to you, too, my friend.

    Love being here!!!

  94. I dislike rats and mice, I don't care how cute some cartoonists make them. But you do keep your productive animals well fed. Not sure about the bear. I keep a little distance between thee and he.

I don't know how people can be blind to so many good and moral teaching. I am reading the THE GREAT HOUSE OF GOD by Max Lucado. I read lots of his books. This is one of his better ones. The best I believe is one of his first, NO WONDER THEY CALLED HIM THE SAVIOR. I am sure the one entitled SIX HOURS ON FRIDAY is good, too

  95. I had to read through all the comments to see if you had any relatives like mine. I have a family member who catches them live and relocates them to a field and picks tomato worms and moves them elsewhere. She thinks I'm evil.

  96. Oh Nezzi you are so funny! I had one of those little critters the other day run in front of me in our shop. Scared me to death!Traci

  97. We just caught a little trespasser in our garage last night...more traps are awaiting any unwanted friends or relatives!

  98. Oh those things really give me the creeps....

  99. At the first sighting, I'd be done. Somebody else would have to handle everything!

  100. Now that is REAL talent - when you can make me laugh about hunting and killing rats! Yikes! I hate those things! The whole time I was reading and laughing out loud, I had my feet off of the floor, because that's what the thought of a rat makes me do! I hope you have rid yourself of those varmits! laurie

  101. What a story! We feed the animals around here too-and have plenty of mice and other rodents!

  102. Thanks for the chuckle. Hope you finally got rid of them.

  103. Thanks for commenting on my blog! I'm tired of the snow too but it does make for some nice pictures. :D I'll be putting up more over the next few days.

  104. A two day corpse in an ice house!
    Now that's cold!

Mickey Mouse and his relatives are smart little critters. Most are smarter than my redneck cousins! :-)

  105. OH MY, you have a way with words. I hate rats, too. They make shivers go up my back. Glad you out witted them!

  106. Nezzy, Your number of comments is incredible! What do you owe your grand popularity to? Could it be your strong destinct voice when you write? Could it be that people love stories about killing rats? I'm impressed! Anyway, thanks for visiting A Camp Host's Meanderings and leaving a comment! I'm avoiding drinking that water at the park no matter how clear they say the last test was of e. coli. I need to understand where its coming from before risking drinking.

  107. Love ya Nezzy! Rats, not so much! I use Assault because it's a really large disc that no pets/chickens might try... From the first night we slept here we've had bats, n rats n squirrels tryin' to kick *us* out! ;-p I hate poison, but I hate critters chewin' up my electric wires n tunneling under my barn aisle concrete so it cracks even worse! Good luck girlfriend!

  109. Thanks for stopping by our blog! I would certainly be looking at purchasing your childhood typewriter from you if you still had it :)

And ick about the rats! My redneck husband would likely just use them for target practice... because nothing is ever complete without a bit of gunpowder around here, eh?

    Nice to "meet" you!

  110. My husband checks frequently to make sure mice haven't decided to make his motorcycle seat or saddle bags their winter home. So far so good.

  116. Oh man, I hate rats. We get them from time to time out here on the farm, and I'm too chicken to put out poison in case one of my animals gets into it. We tried doing the humane trap thing for a while. One morning I found I'd caught a full dozen. Now I just keep my garage and workshop free of anything they can eat, and the compost pile is far away from the house! Between that and the cat running around looking for something to kill, I think we're keeping them at bay. For now!
    Have a great weekend!

  117. I cannot stand rats! It's their tails. And their eyes. And...LOL Hope you got rid of them. Love the way you write!

  119. I don't know if you are still reading these comments (after 100 I could see reading them becoming a chore). I just want to thank you for your great expressions. I was on the phone with my brother who is sitting down in Ozark Co. and had to share some of your expressions over the phone with him. He got a great laugh from it. thanks
