GET ME TO THE CHURCH ON TIME

The Ozark skies were grayin' and there was a crisp wet feel in the air that confirmed a dreaded Missouri ice storm was headed our way. It was January fifth nineteen hundred and seventy three. This Ozark Farm Chick could be heard beltin' out the song, "I'm gettin' married in the mornin'! Ding dong! The bells are gonna chime....", from Mama's little country kitchen as I prepared the rehearsal dinner. The circumstances were definitely not desirable for the perfect dream weddin'. Mother Nature had blessed us with a most horrific ice storm as a wedding present, the wrong flowers were delivered to me and mine were a guest at another weddin', the photographer did not show...Heck, he didn't even bother to call. The handsome little ring bearer ran across my train and ripped it from my dress. Just a typical hitchin'...right??

Well this is one gal who wasn't gonna let a few mind blowin' disasters keep her from marrin' the man of her dreams. I AM Nezzy ya know!!! The Best Man drove all night and delivered the groom's parents and grandmother. Even though they were sittin' in different towns the flowers were switched, just in time. Who needs a professional photographer when ya have a future sister~in~law with a trusty brownie flash camera willing to snap away??? Oh my goodness glory, thank heavens for the extra diaper pins we discovered in the church's nursery to pin the train back on my dress. Despite the horrific circumstances we said our, "I~dos'!

Thirty eight years ago I sang the song that Alfred P. Doolittle sang in the 1956 musical "My Fair Lady" as I cooked and listened to my Grandmother Dow (Ma) gigglin' at me in the background. Thirty eight years ago on January sixth I married the man on my dreams after beltin' out that old show-tune song...."Get Me To The Church On Time!!!"

.........and they moved to the Ponderosa and lived happily ever after! I just love a happy ending.

  5. Maybe the crazy winter weather is why there are so many June weddings. I never really thought about it before, but I guess ice storms wouldn't be in the forecast. :D

  6. As we all have discovered, we think the perfect wedding is the big deal but in actuality, the marriage is the most important of the two. Thirty-eight years! Praise God for such a testimony - - and he's still the man of your dreams, I am sure.

  41. Oh, Nez, my wedding rivals yours!! On the week before the wedding, my bridemaids went to pick up their dresses and they had discontinued the fabric and never told us! They did a rush job in another color....making all the flowers, etc. change too for the wrong color. Then they came in all wrong anyway! We got married on the HOTTEST day of the year in August 71'. No air conditioning in the church....the top layer of the cake slid off like it had melted!!
Dispite it all...here we still are....

  53. Happy Anniversary a few days late. Awhile back I wrote a multi-post blog to our romance and getting married which held some in suspense that it would every happen, but it did 42 years ago.

Not always easy when two cultures (even Americans) meet, but we have made it into old age with some ecstatic memories and some we push to the recesses of our memories. However, I would not trade anything.

  54. This is the kind of story that all perspective brides need to hear...at least ones that worry themselves sick over a pending "weddin'" .. :)
Nezzy, you are a blessing to all of us who read your fantastic blog! I giggle...and am glad to be alive and meeting folks like you! You bless us all!

  122. Nezzie..I believe some of us have survivor stock in us...no matter what happens we push on..and get creative with solutions to do it!!
Looking back on my "elopement" that turned into the town showing up..because hubbie didn't want to make his mom mad...I see the skills I used that day still showing up in me when other things don't go to plan.It has always been with us..not all hold this special talent..lol
I use to tell my children..you might not be the top of the heap when it comes to book knowledge..but common sense and survival....well we will get further than others in bad days to come!!!
They are now all married..and they are chips off this ole farmgirls shoulders..with a lot of their dads farming ways thrown in!!! Proud..proud..proud!!
I read your memorial post....Oh Nezzie...how proud your dad would of been of you..saying words over him...what a tribute!!!!!
