PAPER ROSES

This Ozark Farm chick was shakin' like a fifty cent ladder on gutter cleanin' day when I listened to the weather and heard the frost warnins. When I turned in late last night it was thirty seven degrees and droppin'. My heart sank like a mobsters victim. Oh, my beautiful roses had buds, all my lovely perennials had pushed their heads through the earth. I'm a tad high strung and wound tighter that a three day clock but late last night....I would'a made a pressure cooker look calm.

At thirty one degrees the Ponderosa's frost holler is was colder than a tick on a Mississippi coon hound on a Montana morning. The daylilies foliage blackened bowin' their heads to the earth, my spirit plummeted lower than a snake full of buckshot. Checkin' the curly leaves on my roses. my mind was transported to a science project in our Special Ed. classroom. 'Loved those kiddos and I'd fight tigers in the dark with a switch for 'em unlike their classmates, Middle Schoolers are empathy challenged. 'Just sayin'.........

Each year we would help our very special students participate in the Middle School Science Fair. We had many projects over the years. Little Miss Feisty kept eatin' her atom molecules constructed with Skittles. Mr. I Believe I Can Fly grew colorful salt crystals but the one that really touched my heart was a little sweetheart I'll call Lilly Pie.

Lilly Pie was a 'special' student in the fifth grade. She lived with her mother, little sister and her Mom's boyfriend. Lilly lived in a dysfunctional home at best and had been showin' definite signs of sexual abuse. When Social Services confirmed the situation Lilly's mother was told that she could not have the girls in the house if the boyfriend stayed. Miss Pie's mother told this tender~hearted ten year old girl, "well somebody's gotta leave and it's not gonna be 'him'." 'Broke my heart into a thousand pieces. She was moved into her single grandfathers house. Doesn't that just frost your ankles?

Sweeter than a meal of biscuits and chocolate gravy served with southern sweet tea, this little lady approached us with her Science Fair idea. Roses!!! Woohoo, bestow my heart. Lilly Pie wanted to make a presentation on plantin' and growin' roses. She expressed the desire to present her project in book form. She chose plain old pink copy paper for the pages. Lilly then used the computer to find information and pictures that she would use for her book simply titled 'Roses'.

We helped Lilly glue the information on the pages along with the pictures she'd chosen with good old rubber cement. After everything had dried we used a binder to bind her project together. Simple supplies, nothin' special. Just a little copy paper, printer ink and some rubber cement. We left the project in Lilly Pies cubby in the classroom and locked the door behind us.

I've experienced several supernatural unexplainable remarkable acts of God in my lifetime but this one was for Lilly Pie. The next mornin' as we were thumbin' though Miss Pie's project the scent of roses arose from the pages. We passed the book around to our coworkers and the more the book was handled the stronger the scent became. I went back and sniffed the copy paper which smelled like plain old paper. I checked the rubber cement and it reeked of...well...rubber cement. Heck, I even checked the printer ink. The only explanation I could come up with it that God wanted to make Lilly's project as special as her.

Isn't that just like our Heavenly Father? He takes our brokenness and turns it into something whole and special. He raises us up from that bottomless pit just when we think there is no hope into life abundantly. He guides us to the light when lost in darkness. He takes a young girl's simple project and makes it stand out from the others. That rose scent lasted through the Science Fair and was still strong when we sent it home.

In 1993, Olive Marie Osmond sang the popular song written by Fred Spielman and Janice Torre that was originally Anita Bryant's hit in 1960. Marie's version topped the country charts then crossed over to pop and easy listenin'. I know that Miss Lilly Pie or I will never ever forget the science project that was simply made of 'Paper Roses!!!

'Just thinkin' 'bout it makes me happier than a monkey with a peanut machine!

  3. I do believe in miracles and I'm sure that was one there for sure. Roses are my favorite flowers next to sun flowers. What a blessing that sweet girl had a grandfather to go to. She's blessed also to have a good friend like you too.

  4. There are magical, miraculous things that happen in life that cannot be explained with logic or by science. Lillie Pie's paper roses scent wafting through the air is one of those precious gifts that she well-deserved, poor thing. People may make no sense at all sometimes, but miracles always do. Bless you, Nezzy! :):)

Terrible to think that there are parents out there who would turn against their own children. I hope that little girl never went back to her mother.

  8. Oh Nezzy, what a touching and an amazing story this was.

It breaks my heart that a mother would be so selfish as to not protect her own daughter from this kind abuse.

I hope that this young girl has found some healing as she was growing up. It must have felt terrible for her to be rejected by her own mother. I just hope that she wasn't abused by her grandfather too.

    Hugs, JB

  19. My darling Nezzy,

It is shattering to see a delicate flower like Miss Lilly Pie be abused and then kicked out of her home by her own mother. But with the same compassion that you show to your garden of tattered roses bitten by the frost, who knows how many tender buds you have saved in the classroom. I too.....and even though I resigned from teaching and next year will work as a substitute, I know that there are a few tender shoots I had the honor to help stand up straight. Bless you my dear friend, you are a blessing. Anita

  25. Sounds like a miracle.
It also sounds like angels were placed in that little girls life to protect her, and that you were one of those angels.

Sad that she had to experience such evil at such a young age.
I hope that she was able to live a happier and safer life with her grandpa.
Please tell me that justice was served to her mother and that evil man.

  37. The two m-words: magic, miracle - perfectly fit Lilly Pie's rose project.
Lilly herself, a rose that was denied care and love when in her mother's 'garden',was ultimately given Hope and Help by God Almighty and by people like you, Nezzy.

A very moving story, wonderfully written!

  38. " my spirit plummeted lower than a snake full of buckshot. "

Where DO you come up with these delicious turns of phrase??

Ahhh, Nezzy, such a heart-wrenching tale, with a beautifully sweet surprise end to it. Y'know, having a had one of my own dear babes schooled through a special ed unit, I've sadly seen with my own eyes how many of his fellow students may never have needed to have placed there, had they only been given the love that was their right from birth.

I thank God for the special, caring folk, such as you, they (and my own dear child) were blessed to encounter, in the accepting, safe environment you built for them.

  60. I loved this story. I had a second cousin who taught exceptional (term used in Texas a long time ago for children with learning or behavioral issues in Texas). She was a saint and dearly beloved by her students.

We have friends witha severely mentally retareded and physically deformed 40 year daughter they have cared for all her life. She has never spoken an understandable word. We take them out to lunch or dinner and always include her. She pounds on the table, etc. which I think is her only way of expression for what ever she wants. We don't care who stares at us. They get very few invites. The girl somehow relates to my husband more than me, in interesting ways but, of course, we can't figure out why.

  61. I thought this was gonna make me laugh at first but then, oops, I had to find the tissues. I pray and hope Lilly Pie is safe and happy somewhere.

  91. ......I was in church one afternoon...feeling expecially down on myself...I was still dealing with the same weakness year after year that seemed to inhibit my growth.....I sat there for about fifteen minutes, when suddenly I was aware of the faint smell of roses. Looking around I noticed I was alone, the windows of the church were all closed, and there were no flowers in the church, yet the smell was growing stronger! Looking over to my left, I noticed the statue of St. Therese, the Little Flower, who lived her short life believing that even the most simple of acts could be offered up to God as a loving act. In her arms, as part of her formed statue, she is holding a large bouquet of ROSES! I walked closer to the statue, and with each step the smell of roses was ever stronger. Now we Catholics do love our saints...not to worship or adore...that belongs to God alone. But in knowing that these simple people, warts and all, stand as example of how God showers His abundant love onto all of us.....I will never forget this moment.....thank you for allowing me to share it.......I pray for blessings on Lilly....she sounds like a little St. Threse in the making! 106. Hi Nezzy!

I love your pretty roses! Roses are my favorite flower as I was born in the month of June and therefore they are my birthday flower.

But even more special than your roses is your wonderful rose story. That gave me chills! God works in mysterious ways...

  107. Those are beautiful flowers!
That must be a lot of work to have such a beautiful prolific bunch of flowers!
    Amazing woman you are !!!!

  110. This is an excellent post! It is beyond me how any mother could chose a boyfriend over her own child, pretty sad! I hope Lily Pie is doing well today. I can relate to your Spec. Ed class as I retired from a social service agency where several hundred people with disabilities, from birth to 90's were schooled and aided every day. They need people just like you! Kudos and hugs to you, Nezzie!

  111. Hi Nezzy! First of all, I love that song sung by Marie! She was such a cutie and still is! :)

  112. So purty! And we must be on the same wave-length hun cause I'm writing about roses right now for my post tomorrow! Mine are coming up so many and so full... but I am going to kill the person that stole my yellow ones!

  113. How beautiful, your roses.

And poor Lily. I suspect that it's not an isolated incident, you know? Too many people get their "worth" from their partner, no matter how destructive that partner is. Lily's mother must live with that. I wish only the best for li'l Lily Pie.

She is on earth for something very special and you presented this all in a beautiful way. I do believe we are watched over either by God himself or one of our many appointed Guardian Angels.
Thank you again and I shall be back

  130. Oh sweet Nezzy! You got me choked up on this one! Sometimes unexplainable things do happen and you just have to smile.

Your roses are gorgeous!! If I may be so bold, try shooting in the late afternoon light or early morning when the light turns a golden rosy outside. It will transform your rose shots from beautiful to spectacular. :)

    Cheers!

  131. I loved this story. And I loved the volunteer opportunity to teach the last 12 years of my career in a new Middle School. I had previously enjoyed teaching seniors but those Middle School years were the best. And, of course, all the kids weren't "empathetically challenged." :)

  135. What a wonderful post, full of love and hope and wonder. My heart goes out to Lily Pie wherever she is now. I hope she continued in her love of roses and that she healed the child within to become a woman who is able to reach out to other abused children. Anyone with half a pea brain has to believe that the scent of roses was real. You did a great job telling this story, and you did a great job taking the photos of your roses. How fortunate you are to be looking forward to roses like these this year and many more to come.

  143. You just took me on an emotional roller coaster, starting immediately with a good laugh. Then my heart hurt for that little girl. Hearing that her spirit and creativity was not destroyed, lifted me again. God is good.

Your rose pictures are gorgeous. Did the current ones survive the freeze? Maybe you mentioned it and I missed it because I was thinking of Little Miss Pie.

    EnJoy your day!

  155. I come from a long line of people that root, support and fight for the underdogs of this world. Her Mother should have been horsewhipped and I won't tell you what I'd do to that man. Let's just say my favorite movie of all time is Green Fried Tomatoes...that gives you a little hint.
Your roses are beautiful and I have NO DOUBT that Lillie Pie's book smelled like the real deal! I've had some miracles in my own life and we just need to recognize them when they come along. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger and I'm thinking that where ever Lillie Pie is today she is strong and capable and in a state of grace.

I want to plant roses in momory of may unborn daughter Rachel and my kitty Boots nd Rebekah;s dog Tink, so I need to get tips. We can not really plant until May due to our weather but it has been a heat wave here lately! I love the story about the scent on the paper! So wonderful for the Lord to share such a prize with your little friend. God Bess You!
